HIGHLIGHTS:
Chimneys
They are two vertical cliffs, about 100 m high each one above another. It is a popular rock climbing site. A narrow, zig-zag track pass Chimneys to their top – known as the roof of Sofia. The view to the capital from there is amazing.
Plateau
Most of the plateau is a reservation area. The reason is the peat, which in some part is 2 meters thick. A feeling to feel the springing soil under your feet is unusual. The plateau is a almost flat area, most of it on the altitude above 2000 meters. The contrast to the steep Vitosha slopes is dramatic.
Boyana waterfall
It is the most famous waterfall near Sofia and many tourists do a half day hike to it. It is very charming place with the forest around and sparkling drops everywhere around.
Stone rivers
You don’t know Vitosha, if you miss its stone rivers! There are not many place in the world, where you can see a stone river going down on the slope of the mountain many hundreds of meters. It is one of the miracles of the Nature, but how they were formed? It is a long story by the way – millions of years 🙂
Mt. Vitosha Boyana Waterfall Hike
I contacted Sofia Green Tour and they helped me set up a private hike to Boyana Waterfall, since my flight left too early to go on the free group hike. My guide, Todor, was excellent – he spoke great English & was wonderful to talk to and had a lot of knowledge about the mountain. We event went to the UNESCO site Boyana Church (separate entrance fee of 10 lev) and the Bells Monument (free and you can ring bells donated from countries around the world). For a bit extra, Todor picked me up from my hostel and dropped me off at the airport – excellent service all around! The hike itself was beautiful, a steep path leading to a waterfall that you can climb behind and also above. It was a fantastic way to spend a day in nature close to Sophia and I highly recommend it!
A definite to-do if you are in Sofia, about a 15/20 minute drive from central Sofia is the base of the mountain. The hike itself is intense, and i would not recommend doing it without a guide as there are several routes to the top/waterfall and it is easy to get lost. We saw numerous hikers who were lost. The mountain is steep and dangerous also and so an experienced guide can assist your trek. Our guide was Todor, and he was a great guide, ensuring we were comfortable the whole way.
We went on a trip to the Vitosha mountains with Todor. He was a brilliant guide, took us to beautiful view points. Was so lovely. Also having traditional food at his house with his family was such a lovely thing to do. We had such a great time.
We were looking for a day outside of Sofia that would combine a bit of culture with hiking, and we were very pleased that we selected this tour. Todor picked us up from our hotel, and our first stop was the National History Museum. We spent about an hour there and it was so useful to have a guide who could take us to the highlights and educate us on Bulgarian history. Then onto the charming Boyana Church. We were lucky there were only a few tourists there and we were in the church on our own to see the lovely frescoes. Then the hard part! While we are reasonably fit, this was a very challenging uphill, but really enjoyable, hike! Todor went at a pace that we could manage and we stopped at the lake, the waterfall and the plateau of this part of the mountain. We then had a delightful taste of Bulgarian food at Todor’s apartment on the far side of the mountain. Kremena prepared a couple of traditional dishes and some lovely Balsam tea. Then unfortunately it was time to end the tour and Todor took us back to our hotel. Overall a very enjoyable, if a little tiring, day.
